Words matter.

Stress is a normal part of life. On its own, stress is not a problem. However, if we do not handle it appropriately or adequately, we can create big problems for ourselves.
What we say to ourselves during stressful moments can help or hurt. It's important to be mindful about choosing helpful messages. Here are a few of my favorite messages I tell myself when I am stressed:
"I don't have to have any answers." We like having answers, don't we? But, the drive for having answers can force us to grab at answers that don't serve us well. So, rather than getting myself wrapped up in something that won't serve me well, I prefer to simply remind myself that I don't have to have the answers, and that eventually all answers that I need will become available.
"This too shall pass." It's an oldie but a goodie - and it is just as true today as it was way back in the day when my grandmother used to hear it from her mom.
"This is not mine to control." Sometimes, I need to just ride the wave of emotion and thought, rather than try to fight it.
"Breathe." Seems silly to remind ourselves to do something our body does automatically. But, during stressful moments, we can find ourselves holding our breath, or breathing rapidly. This is a normal physiological response to stress and anxiety. So, a solid reminder can help us to regulate our breathing, which will help us to return to a state of calm.
"I don't mind and it don't matter." This is actually something my ex mother in law taught me. She was so full of wisdom, and she was so very sweet to share it with me. This is the mantra I repeat to myself, usually, when other people's actions or words are impacting my peace of mind. It's a way of helping me to remove my emotion from the facts of the situation so I can address it appropriately.
What are some of the mantras or messages you use to help you deal with stress?
